To celebrate our two year anniversary, we decided it would be fun to do something new. After spending part of the evening in our basement on Friday following tornado sirens - we were happy to be headed out of town.
We chose to go to Nashville as we thought it would reminiscent of our honeymoon - going in little pubs and listening to live music. We however hadn't counted in the weather, three hours into what should have been a five hour drive, we had to pull off the road and wait for tornado warnings to subside.
Ten hours after we left home, we finally reached downtown Nashville. We were both exhausted from being in the car and checked into our hotel hoping to swim. However, the pool was closed due to the high volume of electrical storms. We decided to go eat dinner and do our site seeing in the morning.
Saturday morning we woke to thunder. We were on the 13th floor and when we got into the elevator water was dripping from the ceiling and all over the floor. We thought this was strange until we got to the main floor - where water was all over. People were very upset as most of the highways were closed and they were told they couldn't leave town and they could not book another night because the hotel was starting to flood.
Ross went to get the car from the parking area and overhead the hotel engineer explaining that someone needed to tell the guests to move their cars before the whole parking lot was flooded. We were glad were were moving our car.
As we got on the road headed towards downtown Nashville we drove across a river bridge and saw the water was up to the top just about to burst over. We decided to forgo our site seeing - and just get out of town. We were lucky to have made it out as all the roads were shutting and several we went through only had one freeway lane half covered in water open - no doubt within a few more hours those probably had to shut as well.
I think it would be great to keep everyone in the Nashville area in your prayers - the flooding there was like nothing we had ever seen - the water was covering homes, roadways, we even found out the Opryland Resort that was on our list of sites to see ended flooded with up with ten feet of water by the end of the day Saturday.
We did try to make the best of things - realizing we were fortunate to make it out safely even though we spent a total of sixteen hours driving without being able to see any of Nashville's sights- so we spent a little time with Superman in Metropolis. Who knew Superman was from Illinois.
